Actually, unicode is not a company, but a standard developed by the non profit organisation Unicode Consortium. A bunch of people from various companies (like Adobe, Apple, Google, Microsoft etc) sat together to find a common way for representing characters in computers. Not just latin characters, but also for example Arabic. The official emojis in the file the consortium released are all black and white. I think they just made the faces white because they wanted small but well recognizeable faces, I don't know shit about design though.
What the emojis you know look like is usually decided by the companies that made the operating system you use.
So check your facts and blame Google or Apple but not the non existing "Unicode Company" :)
